Water Quality in Our Community
Clean water is essential to the health and well-being of our residents. Doylestown Township is committed to sharing resources and information that help residents better understand water quality issues, including emerging contaminants like PFAS.
What Are PFAS?
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in products like non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and firefighting foams. Because PFAS break down very slowly, they are often called "forever chemicals" and can build up in soil, water, and even our bodies.
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) are two of the most widely known PFAS. Because these chemicals are used in a variety of consumer products, most—if not all—of us have been exposed to them.
Research shows PFAS may affect human health, and because they can enter drinking water, many state and federal agencies are working to monitor and reduce exposure.

Information for Private Homeowners
If you own a private well or rely on individual water sources, you may be wondering how PFAS could affect your home water supply.
Testing Your Water
- Private wells are not regulated under state or federal drinking water standards. Homeowners are responsible for testing their own water.
- PFAS testing can be arranged through certified laboratories. The PA DEP and EPA provide resources on where and how to test.
Additional Tips
- Learn more on our Septic, Sewer & Water Page
- Stay informed by checking state and federal updates on PFAS guidelines.
- Be aware that PFAS can also be present in consumer products (like non-stick pans, stain-resistant carpets, or water-repellent clothing). Limiting use of these products can help reduce household exposure.
